Building a BBQ pit isn’t just about the cooking. It can be a focal point of your landscape design. It’s also a great project for the do-it-yourselfer that you’ll be able to take a lot of pride in once it’s all done.
Before you run out and start buying construction materials, your first step in constructing a BBQ pit is to figure out where it should be located. You won’t want it too far from the house because you want easy access to your food and supplies. Just about everyone forgets something when they light up the grill and ends up having to run back and forth to the kitchen for missing ingredients and utensils.
Next you should determine the prevailing wind direction so you don’t end up with a lot of smoke blowing into places where you don’t want it, like an open window in your house, or your face. However, you need to make sure it’s in a place where it gets good ventilation so the smoke doesn’t accumulate. You will also want to locate your BBQ pit at some distance from buildings, fences and trees because of the fire hazard.
Choose a location where the ground is fairly level. There are two ways you can go about building the foundation. You could create a base of sand and lay some paving stones on top. Alternatively, you could dig a hole, and then build a wooden framework around the sides that would be filled with concrete.

This is really your best option if you want to avoid making any serious mistakes or oversights. You can make your BBQ pit as decorative as you like, but remember it will get dirty through time.
It doesn’t take a lot of time to build a BBQ pit, but it can be a lot more fun if you invite some friends to help you with the project. Just remember to hold off on the beer until you’re actually ready to light the fire, or you might not be using it that night.
